Portland, Oct 15 (Nepal Oregon News): An engaging talk and comprehensive practice on Goddess Vajrasaraswati Charya Nritya and Charya Giti was organized on the zoom by Hong Kong Buddhist Studies Association (HKBSA) on Saturday, Oct 14, 2023.

The talk as well as the charya nritya practice on Goddess Vajrasaraswati was provided  by Guruji Prajwal Vajracharya, co-founder of the Nritya Mandala Mahavihara on the zoom from the Newar Buddhist temple in Portland, USA.

Addressing the zoom gathering, Vajracharya, a noted Charya nritya guru said:"Even as Goddess Saraswati is prayed and respected in Hinduism, she is also worshipped and adored in Newar Buddhism as well as in Tibetan Buddhism. In fact, she is known as Vajrasaraswati in Newar Buddhism and Yangchenma in Tibetan Buddhism."

Throwing light on the iconography of Vajrasaraswati devi, Prajwal Guruji, who is also a scholar on Newar Vajrayana Buddhism, said:"The Goddess of poetry, arts, music and learning is a four handed deity seated on a white lotus wearing a crown and white saree. Saraswati's bahan (vehicle) is a white swan while she holds Veena (a musical instrument), a book 'Prajnaparamita' and a garland in her hands. One of her hands holding a book signifies that she is the epitome of true knowledge and another hand holding a flower garland represents the power of meditation and spirituality."

Saraswati's four arms symbolize a multitude of concepts: her immanence and transcendence, her front arms portray the Goddess'  divine power in the material realm whereas the back arms in the spiritual realm. They also symbolize four learning-related personality traits of mind, intelligence, consciousness and ego, the Guruji added.

He went on saying that Saraswati's iconography also captures the quintessence of music, knowledge, wisdom and meditation. That is why, according to Newar Buddhism, Vajrasaraswati devi is a swan riding goddess who liberates the world with her wisdom and knowledge, he further said.

Saraswati is not just adored in Nepal, Tibet (China), and India, she is also worshipped in Hong Kong, Thailand, Myanmar, Japan, Cambodia, Laos, Mongolia, Buryatia (Russia) and many other countries, the Guruji said adding:"In Newar Buddhism, Vajrasaraswati is a protector deity who upholds the Buddha's teachings."

The subtle difference of Goddess Saraswati in Hinduism and Buddhism is that devotional part is more important in Hinduism while, in Buddhism, Saraswati is the quintessence and embodiment of wisdom, knowledge and meditation, he told the zoom participants.

Because she is white in color, has one face and occasionally three eyes, Vajrasaraswati is frequently compared to and regarded as White Tara, the Guruji said.

On the occasion, a refuge dance and sixteen offering goddess dance was also performed by Prajwal Guruji.

The presentation focused on Vajrasaraswati charya nritya and charya giti. The charya giti of Vajrasaraswati Devi tells us about the iconography of Goddess Saraswati, her divine power, the embodiment of knowledge, wisdom and meditation, what she is holding, what she is wearing and her bahan (vehicle), the Guruji informed the zoom participants.

"This charya dance is named after the Goddess - Vajrasaraswati devi. Vajrasaraswati charya dance is one of the ancient classical charya dances  of Newar Vajracharyas. This dance is performed especially as a devotion to Vajrasaraswati devi," said Prajwal Guruji.

He informed the participants:"The melody or Raga for charya nritya of Vajrasaraswati may be different, but we do it in the Raga of Vajrasattva charya giti."

Prajwal Guruji also performed the charya nritya dance 'Vajrasaraswati' during the teaching. The charya giti on the occasion was vocalized by Sangha member Leson Baker. In Vajrasaraswati charya dance, hand mudra is crucial, symbolic movements of fingers, hands and legs are skillfully timed with general body movements and facial expressions, Prajwal Guruji added.

The Guruji answered to numerous questions of the participants. The teaching on Vajrasaraswati was attended by 25 people from different countries on the zoom and 7 participants took part from the temple.

Prajwal Guruji, Others Honored with Certificate of Appreciation at NAO AGM and Dashain Event

Portland, (Nepal Oregon News): Prajwal Ratna Vajracharya, co-founder of Nritya Mandala Mahavihara and a leading Charya Dance teacher in the world was honored with Certificate of Appreciation at 22nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Dashain celebration event which was organized by Nepali Association of Oregon (NAO) on Friday, Oct 20, 2023 at Aloha Grange, Beaverton.

The certificate of appreciation mentioned:"This certificate is proudly presented to Prajwal Vajracharya and team for promoting the traditional Charya dance and showcasing the Nepalese culture in the Rose Festival Starlight Parade, 2023."

The certificate of appreciation was signed by NAO president Daya Shakya and secretary Ganga Sharma.

Vajracharya has been honored with numerous awards and certificates by different organizations in the past.

Meanwhile, Jangbu Sherpa, president of Non-resident Nepalese Association USA Oregon  chapter and Laxman Darlamee, NRNA USA Board of Directors member were other personalities who were also presented with certificates of appreciation for their contributions to the community.

Anniversary Cleaning Campaign Organized

Portland, (Nepal Oregon News): A two-day cleaning drive was launched on Saturday- Sunday, Oct 28 - 29, 2023 at the Nritya Mandala Mahavihara (NMM), Portland as part of preparation for the fourteenth anniversary celebration of the NMM. 

During the cleaning drive, not only were the doors and windows of the Mahavihara cleaned, but the idols and small statues of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas were also cleaned. The Chiva Dyo located on the premises of the Vihara was also cleaned.

The volunteers who offered help for cleaning were provided with Newah-style lunch by Prajwal Guruji.

Vihara Celebrates Prajwal Guruji's Birthday with a Gathering

Portland, (Nepal Oregon News): A gathering was organized to celebrate the birthday of Prajwal Guruji on Oct 8, 2023 at the Nritya Mandala Mahavihara.

It is to be noted that 10.8 (Oct 8) is an auspicious figure in Newar Buddhism.

About 35 Sangha members and community members attended the birthday gathering.

House Blessing Ritual Performed

Portland, (Nepal Oregon News): A house-blessing ritual was performed by Prajwal Guruji at the home of Corinne Nakamura-Rybak and John Rybak at south-east Portland in October, 2023.

Corinne is a board-member of the Nritya Mandala Mahavihara whereas her husband John is an active Sangha member.

The purpose of the ritual was to purify the house, to ensure its safety and prosperity, said Prajwal Guruji.

Similarly, a purification ritual was also performed in October, 2023 by Prajwal Guruji for the hairdressing salon owned by a member of the Nepali community in Beaverton.

Weekly Activities in Vihara Continue

In October, as usual and as always, Dharani chanting on Zoom was conducted once a week every Tuesday evening. Similarly, Sadhana practice and Buddha Bhajan singing practice were held on each Wednesday evening. Likewise, the practice of singing Charya giti was performed in the mornings every Friday.

Portland, Sept 28 (Nepal Oregon News): During his month-long visit to Nepal (Sept 1-27, 2023), Prajwal Guruji, co-founder of Nritya Mandala Mahavihara, was able to attend various programs, meet important personalities, visit important Buddha Dharma related places and most notably visit less explored caves of Nepal.

No doubt, Nepal is well-known  as a country of temples, stupas and chaityas. But Nepal is also renowned for its ancient and medieval caves that are well-known  but at the same time there are also historical caves in Nepal that are not well known and that are less accessible to the people.

Prajwal Guruji and other Sangha members Teya DeSesa, Anna Shustrova, Dmitry Skvortsov along with Rajya Laxmi Shakya and other local people embarked on a  journey to have a  view of some of the little known and little seen Buddhist caves of Nepal. One of them is Guru Rinpoche cave at Temal, Sindhupalchowk.

The banner at the gate of the cave says:"Welcome to the auspicious place Temal. The holy place is like eight auspicious marks."

A member of Prajwal Guruji's month-long trip to Nepal - Teya DeSesa - says:"Unknown to most tourists with Google maps offering no help, Prajwal set out to find the hidden cave of Nagarjun. Above lie two more caves, difficult to traverse during the current monsoon season, home to many aggressive mosquitoes and leeches."

Teya further says:"Prajwal and a small team reached the second cave, called 'Buffalo cave'. The third and final reachable cave called 'Middle cave' was a beautiful site to gaze upon, especially after hours of hiking and climbing countless stairs." 

Meanwhile, on Sept 18, 2023, Prajwal Guruji  together with Teya DeSesa, Anna Shustrova, Dmitry Skvortsov and Natalia Sanders also visited Itum Bahal and Itum Baha Museum which was launched only last year. There are 18 Vajrayana Buddhist Mahaviharas in Kathmandu and Itum Baha  is the largest among them. Itum Baha is rich with ancient heritages. 

Prajwal Guruji and the team also visited National Art Museum of Nepal in Kathmandu and Spiritual Arts Gallery in Patan during their visit to Nepal. While in Nepal, Prajwal Guruji also had a meeting with Kathak Guru Honey Shrestha and Arun Shrestha  (author of a book entitled 'Charya: Dancing Away to Nirvana'). The Guruji along with Anna, Dmitry, Teya and Alla Zakharova were able to attend a Kurukulla puja ceremony at Shree Padma Bhandar Mahayana Buddhist Monastery. Similarly, Prajwal Guruji together with other Sangha members also visited Namobuddha, Bhadrakali and many other historical and religious sites in  the Kathmandu valley. Likewise, Prajwal Guruji was also felicitated by Bajracharya Club in Kathmandu.

Lama Lena's Teachings on "Introduction to Dzogchen" Held at Nritya Mandala Mahavihara

Portland, Sept 7, (Nepal Oregon News): A teaching on "Introduction to Dzogchen and View of Six Paramita" by Lama Lena was held at the Nritya Mandala Mahavihara, Portland on Wednesday, Sept 6, 2023. Lama Lena's teaching event was coordinated by Phyllis Moses,  a Sangha member of the Nritya Mandala Mahavihara. 

During the teaching, Lama Lena discussed what Dzogchen is and how to practice it.

Lama Lena's teaching presented a detailed and comprehensive description of Dzogchen and importance of Six Paramita: Dana (Generosity), Sila (Morality), Ksanti (Patience), Virya (Vigor), Dhyana (Meditation) and Prajna (Wisdom).

Throwing light on Dzogchen, Lama Lena said:"The beginning of Dzogchen is the same as the end of Dzogchen, which is that Buddha nature is just inherent in you. It is already there."

Lama Lena went on saying:"You do not have to acquire it, be good enough for it, develop it, or any of these things. It is inherently present and always has been."

Lama Lena added:"It is the true, infinite, open awareness which arises naturally as the innate, luminous, lucid vitality which itself is the innate, shimmering, sparkling creativity which is inherent in all life."

Lama Lena also answered to numerous questions of the participants. About 25 people attended in person at the Mahavihara while 15 people took part at the teaching through the zoom.

For in-person audience as well as for  the zoom participants, Lama Lena's teaching was an event that gave the participants  an opportunity to be enlightened  with the ideas about Tibetan Buddhism.

Lama Lena (Yeshe Kaytup) is a teacher of Direct Mind Perception Meditation (Dzogchen and Mahamudra) and a lineage holder of several Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Her informal style is precise and direct; and she is revered by students around the world for her exceptional ability to share profound teachings in a clear, poetic and humorous way.

Beginning in 1972, Lama Lena spent three years studying with Lama Thubten Yeshe at his monastery in Nepal. She then spent seven years in retreat and practice in a small cave above Tso Pema under the tutelage of her root teacher, Ven Wangdor Rimpoche. From then on, she continued to travel extensively with him as his main translator and assistant. 

At the request of H.E. Zigar Choktrul Rimpoche and Ven Wangdor Rimpoche - as well as many Western and Tibetan Dharma students, Lama Lena has been travelling, teaching and translating from the lineage she holds.

 Flute and Tabla Performance Livens Newar Buddhist Temple

Portland, Sept 31 (Nepal Oregon News): A powerful classical flute performance by world famous bamboo flute master Steve Gorn and Tabla playing by renowned multi-instrumentalist Benjy Wertheimer was organized at the Nritya Mandala Mahavihara on Saturday, Sept 30, 2023.

At the beginning of the musical performance, Guru Prajwal Vajracharya, co-founder of the Nritya Mandala Mahavihara, gave a short introduction of Steve Gorn and Benjy Wertheimer.

I am very happy that Steve and Benjy are here at the Newar Buddhist temple to offer the classical Hindustani musical performance, Prajwal Guruji said.

The enthralling and mesmerizing Bansuri performance of Steve was accompanied on Tabla by Benjy.

And there is no doubt that Steve and Benjy are musicians with a penchant for Hindustani classical music.

Steve Gorn has performed Indian classical music on the Bansuri Bamboo flute in concerts and festivals throughout the world. A disciple of Sri Gour Goswami of Kolkota, and Pandit Raghunath Seth of Mumbai, he is well known to audiences in India and the West.

He has been praised by critics and leading Indian musicians as one of the few Westerners recognized to have captured the subtlety and beauty of Indian classical music.

A Grammy winner and five time Grammy nominee, Steve Gorn is creating a new idiom, a music that combines the essence of classical Indian tradition with a contemporary world music from a virtuoso mastery, generating a vibrant fusion, alive and accessible to Western ears.

Benjy Wertheimer is an award winning musician, composer, vocalist, producer and multi-instrumentalist equally accomplished on Tabla, congas, percussion, esraj, guitar and keyboards.

Benjy has performed and recorded with such artists as Krishna Das, Deva Primal and Miten, Jai Uttal, Walter Becker of Steely Dan, virtuoso guitarist Michael Mandrell, Tabla Master Zakir Hussein, and renowned bamboo flute master G. S. Sachadev.

He has also opened for such well-known artists as Carlos Santana, Paul Winter and Narada Michael Walden. Benjy is a founding member of the internationally acclaimed world fusion ensemble 'Ancient Future'.

The concert was one of the rare opportunities for a limited number of audience at the Newar Buddhist temple in Portland to dive into the ocean of raga with bamboo flute master Steve Gorn and multi-instrumentalist Benjy Wertheimer.

Naamsangiti Chanted for a Month during the Gunla Dharma at Portland's Newar Buddhist Temple

Portland, Sept 17 (Nepal Oregon News): One month of Gunla Dharma - which is one of the most important and  auspicious  times in  Newar Buddhism - was observed at Portland's Nritya Mandala Mahavihara in person and in the zoom from Aug 17 to Sept 16, 2023 by chanting Maha Manjushree Naamsangiti.

The participants who chanted Naamsangiti for the whole month of Gunla included Sangha members of the Mahavihara (Newars, Chinese and American Buddhists) from Oregon, as well as from Nepal, Hong Kong, Finland, New York and California.

Prajwal Guruji participated at the month-long Naamsangiti chanting event through the zoom, because he was in a Nepal trip during the period of Gunla Dharma. He also took part at the Naamsangiti chanting held at Mantrasiddhi Mahavihara in Kathmanndu.

Prajwal Guruji said:"In Vajrayana Buddhism, Naamsangiti is one of the most important preachings of Shakyamuni Tathagata. It consists of 167 verses and Mantra sentences."

The Guruji added:"Naamsangiti is the quintessence of Buddhism because it summarizes all the Buddha's teachings."

The far-reaching importance of Naamsangiti lies on the fact that Manjushree Bodhisattva is the embodiment of all knowledge, Prajwal Guruji went on saying.

At a time when a lot of heritage, historical and religious scriptures are on the verge of extinction,  disseminating the sacred Tantras and preachings is essential to keep them alive, said Prajwal Guruji adding:"That is why Nritya Mandala Mahavihara in Portland, USA is committed to protect, promote and preserve these sacred things."

Meanwhile, a Paru Bhoye was also organized on the last day of Gunla month at Portland's Newar Buddhist temple by Suva and Uppa Shakya.

It is to be noted that the Mahavihara has been organizing Manjushree Naamsangiti recitation on every full moon day of the month since July 2020. Also, Naamsangiti is recited daily at the Mahavihara during the month of Gunla (Nepal Sambat Lunar Calendar) in person and on the zoom.

Prajwal Vajracharya's Visit to HK, Japan Meaningful

US Dance Mandal, HK Dance Mandal Join Forces  to Further Promote Charya Dance

Portland, Aug 9 (Nepal Oregon News): Prajwal Vajracharya, co-founder of Nritya Mandala Mahavihara in Portland, founder of Dance Mandal Nepal and Dance Mandal USA was in Hong Kong for a two-week visit from July 26 - August 8, 2023. Going by the programs and  events during his Hong Kong visit organized by different HK organizations, it appeared that the US Dance Mandal and Hong Kong Dance Mandal joined forces in disseminating the value of Newar Buddhism and publicizing Newar Buddhist charya dances in Hong Kong. Prajwal Guruji's Hong Kong visit was marked by the further strengthening and consolidation of contacts and cooperation between US Dance Mandal and Hong Kong Dance Mandal.

An introduction and demonstration of Newar Buddhist Charya Nritya dances was organized on Friday, July 28, 2023 by the Alumni Association of Master of Arts Program in Religious Studies - Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK AAMARS).

On the occasion, Prajwal Vajracharya, a 35th generation Vajrayana priest, said that charya nritya is a Newar Vajrayana Buddhist ritual dance with a history going back to more than 1,000 years.

He said:"Charya nritya dances are performed by Newar Buddhist priests known as Vajracharyas  as part of their esoteric meditation, practices and rituals."

Prajwal, one of the seniormost Charya nritya gurus in the world, added :"Charya dance is a meditational dance that tells stories of the inner qualities and awakening of Buddhist deities."

Prajwal from the Dance Mandal USA and Sangha members from the Hong Kong Dance Mandal offered refuge prayer and sixteen offering Goddess dance.

Likewise, Avalokiteshvara and Prajnaparamita charya dances were presented by members of the Hong Kong Dance Mandal, whereas Prajwal Guruji performed Vajrasattva charya dance on the occasion.

The program of the demonstration of Charya nritya dances was organized at Kuan Yin Progress Society that belongs to Western Temple in Hong Kong. The program was attended by 70 Hong Kongers.

Likewise, an empowerment (Dikchha) and teaching on deity Padmanateshvara was organized by Hong Kong Dance Mandal on July 29, 2023 at Utpala Meditation Center in Hong Kong. The teaching and empowerment was conducted by Prajwal Guruji and was attended by 26 people.

Similarly, a Gurumandala Puja Teaching was organized on the premises of Hong Kong Buddhist Studies Association (HKBSA) on July 30 - Aug 6, 2023.

Speaking on the occasion, Prajwal Guruji said:"The Gurumandala Puja Vidhi purification ritual is the most common ritual practiced in Newar Vajrayana Buddhism in Nepal."

Touching on the history of Gurumandala Puja, Vajracharya who is a scholar on Newar Vajrayana Buddhism said the ritual has been passed down for 1,000 years. The Gurumandala is so important that without it there is no Mahayana, no Vajrayana in Nepal, he added. The workshop on Gurumandala Puja was participated in by 20 Hong Kong Buddhists.

Also, Mudra Yoga workshop was conducted by Prajwal Guruji for Hong Kong Sangha members on July 31,  2023. Similarly, Avalokiteshvara Sadhana was performed in Hong Kong for the Sangha members on Aug 1, 2023 to mark the Gun Punhi Full Moon Day. Basic Vajra Dance class 1 including refuge prayer and Avalokiteshvara sloka was conducted by the Guruji  on Aug 2 and Basic Vajra Dance class 2 including 16 offering Goddess dance was offered by the Guruji on Aug 3. All these events took place at Utpala Meditation Center in Hong Kong, and around 18 to 24 participants took part at these courses.

Aug 5 was the birthday of Dr Tina Ho, the leader of Hong Kong Dance Mandal. Prajwal Guruji, who is a priest from one of the Vajrayana Buddhist lineages of Nepal, performed Nine Planets puja ritual in the morning of that day on the occasion of Tina's birthday on the premises of Hong Kong Buddhist Studies Association.

Aug 5 is also Avalokiteshvara Day according to Chinese Lunar Calendar. To mark the Avalokiteshvara Day, a Charya Nritya dance program "Thousand Years Vajra Dances on Avalokiteshvara Night" was organized by Hong Kong Dance Mandal at Nada Sound Healing Center, Hong Kong.

The event dedicated to Avalokiteshvara  Day kicked off with Avalokiteshvara Vajra dance by  Dr Tina Ho, while White Tara Vajra dance was presented by Dr Eliza My Lau. Similarly, Tara Vajra dance was performed by Eliza Lau, Shira Chan, Patty Chan, Mary Lau while Vajrasattva Vajra dance was offered by Eleanor Li. Little later, Prajwal Guruji and Dr Tina Ho danced together the lovely and respectful Amoghasiddhi and Arya Tara Vajra dance. Kerry Ho and Sin Yin Leung gave a Vajra dance performance 'Manjushree'. Likewise,  Padmanateshvara Vajra dance was demonstrated by Ling Ling Lee, whereas Kurukulla Vajra dance was put on the stage by Saldon Wu. The event came to an end with Mahakala Vajra dance which was displayed by Prajwal Guruji, the teacher at the US Dance Mandal.

Furthermore, an advanced teaching on Saraswoti charya nritya was held on Aug 6-7. The advanced teaching on  Saraswoti charya nritya, which was organized at Utpala Meditation Center, Hong Kong for Sangha members of the Hong Kong Dance Mandal, was attended by 20 persons. The teaching was conducted by senior Charya Nritya guru Prajwal Vajracharya of the US Dance Mandal.

Moreover, during his stay in Hong Kong, Prajwal Guruji also visited Tsz Shan Monastery and Big Avalokiteshvara (July 31), Zhen Bao Museum and Dharmasthiti Group (Aug 2), Western Temple (Aug 3) and Big Buddha (Aug 4).

Meanwhile, Hong Kong Sangha members Dr Tina Ho, Dr Eliza My Lau, Patty Chan, Dickon Kong, Eleanor Li, John Liu, Mary Lau, Eliza Lok Yee, Kerry Ho, Sin Ying, Saldon Wu, Shira Chan have expressed their feelings of gratitude to Prajwal Guruji for his valuable teaching and charya nritya participation during his visit to Hong Kong.

Group Ihi, Bratabandha Ceremonies, among Other Programs, Held during Prajwal Guruji's Japan Visit

Portland, Aug 30 (Nepal Oregon News): Prajwal Vajracharya, co-founder of Nritya Mandala Mahavihara  was in Japan for about three weeks from Aug 10 to 29, 2023. Yuko Okomoto, a Japanese monk and first charya nritya dancer of Japan, coordinated Prajwal Guruji's visit to Japan. Yuko, who studied at CNAS Research Center at Tribhuvan University, is fluent in Nepali and Nepal Bhasa.

Just like in Hong Kong, a number of programs and events took place at different places in Japan during the Guruji's visit. And judging by various programs in Japan during his visit to the 'Land of the Rising Sun', it was very fruitful in further publicizing Newar Buddhism and charya nritya dances in Japan. 

Meanwhile, a program was organized at Wakasa Historical Museum at Wakasa, Fukui on Saturday, Aug 12, 2023. There was an exhibition of Vajra Dhatu and Dharma Dhatu Mandala at the museum. Speaking on the occasion, Prajwal Guruji said:"Vajra Dhatu is a metaphysical space inhabited by 53 deities including Pancha Buddhas -- Vairochana, Amitabha, Amoghasiddhi, Akshovya, Ratnasambhava, 16 Mahabodhisattvas, 16 Bhadrakalpa Bodhisattvas, 8 Offering Goddesses and 8 Dvarpalas."

Prajwal Guruju went on saying:"According to Newar Vajrayana Buddhism, the whole universe is moving about and revolving around the Vajradhatu's fundamental principles." 

Vajradhatu rituals and practices date back to thousands of years in Newar Vajrayana Buddhism, the Guruji added. The program at the Wakasa Historical Museum was attended by 50 people. During the program, Prajwal Guruji replied to various queries of the participants. Also, on the occasion, Prajwal presented Maha Vairochana and Mahakala charya dances whereas Yuko Okomoto performed Manjushree and Pancha Buddha charya dances.

Similarly, a workshop on Mudra and Charya Nritya was organized on Sunday, Aug 13, 2023 on the premises of Shere Space Hako at Takashima, Shiga. The workshop on Mudra and Charya Nritya was attended by 15 people. Addressing the Japanese guests, Prajwal Vajracharya said:"The Buddhist deities embody hand mudras for purity, power and wisdom. Applying the appropriate gesture can heal the organs, tissues, bones and nerves of the body."

"The Charya performer goes into a meditative state and lets his body flow in movements," added the veteran Charya nritya guru.

Prajwal Guruji and Yuko were scheduled to visit Osaka, but due to the approaching of typhoon No 17, they had to stop in Nishimajima, and the workshop that was planned for the next day had to be abruptly cancelled. However, charya nritya dances were performmed on the occasion. The Guruji offered Vajrasattva and Mahakala charya dances while Yuko Okomoto presented Lokeshvara and Vajrayogini charya dances.

Likewise, a workshop on Newar Buddhism and Charya Nritya was organized on Sunday, Aug 20, 2023 at Hoya Hoya Studio in Tokyo. Throwing light on the Charya nritya, Prajwal Guruji said:"Charya nritya, a unique Newar Buddhist dance dating back a thousand years, uses the physical body as a vehicle for liberating the mind." In charya,singing is the mantra and dancing is the meditation, the Guruji added.

Meanwhile, a Homa puja was conducted by Prajwal Guruji at Nikko Shuryamao Temple in Kanuma city on Monday, Aug 21, 2023. On the occasion, Prajwal Guruji empowered eight Japanese monks with the Dikchha of Rakta Ganesha by performing Homa Puja. It is in this Japanese temple that esoteric Ganesh has been worshipped for centuries. That is why the Japanese monks were given Rakta Ganesha empowerment as per Newar Vajrayana traditions. In the mean time, on Thursday, Aug 22, a teaching on Newar Vajrayana Buddhism, Mudra, Deity Yoga was also conducted by Prajwal Guruji at a huge Buddha temple in Kanagawa.

A Newar Buddhist 'Chiva Dyo' stupa was consecrated by Buddhist scholar and ritual master late Ratna Kaji Vajracharya (father of Prajwal Guruji) on the premises of Nagoya Shibashi in 1989. Prajwal Guruji visited the Chiva Dyo in Nagoya and attended a luncheon with Guru Kawayashi. Besides, Mr Koujiyaba, who is associated with Kyoto Buddhist University as a cultural anthropologist (especially in Asian Music Studies) also came to pay a courtesy call to Prajwal Guruji and Yuko. On the occasion, discussions were held about consecration of a Buddha Murti (donated by Yuko) on the same premises in memory of noted Pauva artist late Gautam Vajracharya (Prajwal's elder brother).

Furthermore, on Friday, Aug 25, Prajwal Guruji was in Shizuoka city for couple of days. The Guruji visited various ancient and medieval temples in Shizuoka. Besides, a dance exchange program was organized on Saturday, Aug 26 at a Buddhist temple in Shizuoka  which was built 1300 years ago. The city of Shizuoka is also known as second Kyoto. Manjushree, Pancha Buddha, Rakta Ganesha and Mahakala charya dances were presented on the occasion. By the same token, the Japanese dancers also presented their native dances, which according to Prajwal Guruji, were performed in the form of Boddhisattvas just like Newar Buddhist charya dances.

Meanwhile, a group Ihi and Bratabandha ceremony was organized by Newa International Forum Japan (NIFJ) at Solmari Restaurant, Shin Okubo, Tokyo on Monday, Aug 27. Six girls from Newar community attended the Ihi ceremony while a bratabandha ceremony for two Newar boys was also held in Tokyo. Both Ihi and Bratabandha ceremonies were ritualized by Prajwal Vajracharya, a 35th generation Vajrayana priest and chief pujari at Nritya Mandala Mahavihara in Portland, USA.

It was a historic event for Newar community in Tokyo because it was the first group Ihi and Bratabandha ceremony solemnized by an authentic Newar Buddhist  priest and ritual master. The ceremony was attended by more than 100 Newar community  members, and the chief guest on the occasion was Nepalese Ambassador to Japan His Excellency Durga Bahadur Subedi.

Extending congratulations to the participants and organizers of the cultural and traditional ceremony on behalf of the Embassy as well as on behalf of the Nepal government, Ambassador  Subedi stressed on the need for unity within diversity among Nepalese people of different ethnic backgrounds.

Speaking on the occasion, Guruji Prajwal Vajracharya said that Ihi, Bara Tayegu, Bratabandha and Chudakarma etc which are  important part of lifecycle rituals, have been in practice since hundreds of years.

Ambassador Subedi, on the occasion, handed over certificate of appreciation to Guruji Prajwal and Japanese monk Yuko Okamoto on behalf of NIFJ. The Ambassador also gave away certificates to the Ihi girls and Bratabandha boys.

The certificate of appreciation handed over to Prajwal Guruji states:"This certificate is given to Prajwal Ratna Vajracharya, Buddhist monk, Charya Nritya Guru and traditional Nepali Nritya Guru for his invaluable contribution to the field of  Nepali Traditional Dance Culture, Charya Nritya and sacred Buddhist practices."

Gunla Dharma being Celebrated

Nritya Mandala Mahavihara is celebrating a month-long Gunla Dharma by reciting Naamsangiti everyday in the zoom for the whole month of Gunla in the Nepal Sambat era. This year, the month-long Gunla  Dharma kicked off on August 17 and is being wrapped up on September 16.

Portland, Aug 7 (Nepal Oregon News): The swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected office bearers of Non-resident Nepali Association - National Coordination Council (NRNA NCC USA) Oregon Chapter kicked off on Sunday, Aug 6, 2023 amid a gala function at the US West Coast Taekwondo Hollywood School in Portland.

The chief guest of the swearing-in ceremony was Diwakar Maharjan, a noted Taekwondo Guru and founder president of the Oregon chapter. The NRNA event was presided over by newly elected Oregon chapter chair Jangbu Sherpa.

Octogenarian Nepali Portlander Devi Laxmi Maharjan felicitated Nepalese community leaders in Oregon and newly elected chapter office bearers by wrapping traditional Nepali Khata on them.

Mr Jangbu Sherpa was already sworn in as Oregon chapter's newly elected president at a recent NRNA conference in Chicago. That is why NRNA Oregon's immediate past president Laxman Darlamee gave the oath of office to the newly elected office bearers.

Those who were given oath of office were newly elected office bearers of NRNA Oregon chapter: Kamal Kumar Shrestha - vice president, Kiran Adhikari - secretary, Nileema Ozha - women's secretary, Ranjita Pariyar Ojha - treasurer, Sanad Thapa - chapter youth coordinator, Minu Karki Maharjan - chapter board member, Birendra Thapa - chapter board member and Padam Thapa - chapter board member.

Laxman Darlamee, immediate past president and recently elected member of the board of directors of NRNA USA gave away certificates of election to the newly elected office bearers.

Certificates of election were issued by the National Election Commission, NRNA NCC USA. 

On the occasion, certificates of honor were presented to Raju Mali, Ganga Sharma, Bharat Banskota, Daya Shakya, Shuddhodan Ranjit and Kush Shrestha by chief guest Maharjan.

Speaking on the occasion, outgoing chapter president Darlamee threw light on the works done by NRNA and said that NRNA is a formidable global organization.

The newly elected Oregon chapter president Jangbu Sherpa  reciprocated to the sentiments expressed by the outgoing president and committed to follow the trail blazed by his predecessors.

Also, speaking on the occasion, chief guest Maharjan, community leaders Raju Mali, Ganga Sharma, Bharat Banskota, Daya Shakya, Shuddhodan Ranjit, Kush Shrestha also stressed on  the need for further coordination between NRNA Oregon chapter and Nepali Association of Oregon (NAO).

The swearing-in ceremony, which was attended by more than 100 Nepalese Portlanders including NAO activists,  NRNA members  and representative of Nepal Oregon News, was followed by a Nepali style dinner.

Portland, August 1 (Nepal Oregon News): A senior age 'Janko' religious ceremony of Ramesh Shakya and Kalpana Shakya was held at San Mateo, California on Friday, July 30, 2023. Mr Ramesh Shakya is a former professor at Amrit Science College under the Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu.

The Bhimratharohan ceremony of the Shakya couple was solemnized by Prajwal Vajracharya, chief pujari at Portland's Nritya Mandala Mahavihara, the only Newar Buddhist temple in the USA.

Bura-buri Janko related rituals, such as, Homa Puja, Nag Puja, Kalash Puja and Bali Puja were ritualized by Prajwal Guruju.

According to Prajwal Guruju, "When a man or woman turns 77 years, 7 months 7 days and 7 hours, there is a special ceremony to perform. The Janko observance calls on the Goddess of long life - Usnisavijaya - to purify Karma and bestow the blessing of good health and long life span."

Bhimratharohan is a crucial and essential ritual in Newar culture and important lifecycle ceremony in a life of a man, said Prajwal Guruju.

Interaction on Yoga Organized in Portland

Portland, July 21 (Nepal Oregon News): A Yoga Therapy and Motivational Class for Healthy Living with Yoga teacher Subarna Lal Chitrakar was organized at the Nritya Mandala Mahavihara on Thursday, July 20, 2023.

The interaction with the Nepali Yoga teacher was attended by about 20 people. Prior to the starting of the Yoga program, Prajwal Vajracharya of the Mahavihara gave a brief introduction of Mr Chitrakar.

Subarna Lal Chitrakar is a former colonel at Nepalese Army. He has served and participated in Nepal Army's peace keeping operations in a number of conflict-ridden countries across the world.

Speaking on the occasion, Chitrakar said:"If you want to live healthy and happy life without a doctor, then you should practice Yoga."

During the brief  one-hour Yoga class, Chitrakar threw light on Khatkarma, Hath Yoga, Astanga Yoga, Food Therapy, Ayurveda Therapy, Natural Therapy, Yoga Lifestyle and Yogic Anatomy and Physiology.

Chitrakar - who has been in journey on spiritual life for 30 years - shared about spirituality, Yoga, Dhyana, Sadhana and natural way of living with the community members of Portland, USA.

The Yoga interaction program was followed by a vegetarian potluck dinner.

Tibetan Yoga Retreat Held at Portland's Newar Buddhist Temple

Portland, July 24 (Nepal Oregon News): A week-end three day Tibetan Yoga Retreat was held at the Nritya Mandala Mahavihara from Friday-Sunday July 21-23, 2023.

The three-day weekend retreat which was conducted by Dr James H. Bae was participated by 12 people.

Dr James H. Bae is a doctor of acupuncture and Chinese medicine. 

For 25 years, Dr Bae has dedicated his focus on research, education and clinical work in the area of mind body medicine.

Dr Bae's particular focus is on the intersections of traditional Asian Medicine, Yoga and Contemplative Practice.

In July, as usual and as always, Dharani chanting on Zoom was conducted once a week every Tuesday. Manjushree Naamsangiti chanting was held on Full Moon Day of August 1, 2023. Similarly, Sadhana practice and Buddha Bhajan Singing Practice were held on each Wednesday evening. Likewise,  the practice of singing Charya giti was performed in the mornings of every Friday.

Newar Buddhism, Newar Culture on Display at Starlight Parade in Portland, USA

Mahavihara's Participation at Starlight Parade is a Hit with Portland Community

Portland, June 4 (Nepal Oregon News): For the first time in the history, Nritya Mandala Mahavihara represented Nepal by participating at the Starlight Parade in Portland on Saturday, June 3, 2023.

There is no doubt that it is an honor for Nepalese community in Oregon, USA to take part at Portland's Starlight Parade for the first time in community's history. The Nepalese participation at the Starlight Parade was organized by the Nritya Mandala Mahavihara in collaboration with Seattle-based nonprofit 'Dabuli', Newah Organization of America - Seattle chapter and Nepali Association of Oregon.

Starlight Parade is held once a year as part of the Portland Rose Festival that was launched 116 years ago in 1907.

The Mahavihara's participation at the parade showcased traditional and historical art, music, dance and more. The focus of the Mahavihara's participation at the parade was to expose the culture and traditions of Newar Buddhism to the city and its people and also to provide an opportunity for the broader public to experience the very rich and unique but often inaccessible traditions of Newar Buddhism.

It provided an artistic platform in which not only Charya dances and Charya giti including Pancha Buddha were featured, but it also showcased Living Goddess Kumari, Lakhe Dance, Dhime Baja and so on. The Nepalese Sherpas were seen walking in their traditional dresses.

During the parade, Dhime Baja was played by Dr Subhas Prajapati of Seattle-based non-profit 'Dabuli', while Lakhe dance was the courtesy of World Newah Organization, Seattle chapter. Likewise, Raju Mali, founder president of Nepali Association of Oregon (NAO) collaborated with the Mahavihara on the chariot of Living Goddess Kumari.

The participants offered a wide spectrum in terms of ethnicity: Newars (Buddhist as well as Hindu Newars), non-Newars, and American Buddhists.

All the Nepalese participants in their traditional Saree and Daura Suruwal were able to grab the attention of the Portland street audience.

Judging by the local radio comments, Nritya Mandala Mahavihara's participation at the Starlight Parade was a  hit with the Portland community.

There were hundreds of positive comments and supportive messages in Facebook posts related to Mahavihara's  participation at the historical Starlight Parade in Portland, USA. Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication at the Tribhuvan University,  Prabal Raj Pokhrel candidly made a comment in the Facebook:"Preservation of cultural heritage is praiseworthy."

Special Charya Nritya Dance Offering Organized to Felicitate Hong Kong's Dr Tina Ho in Portland

Portland, June 10 (Nepal Oregon News): A special Charya Nritya Dance offering was organized at the Nritya Mandala Mahavihara on Friday, June 9, 2023 to welcome and felicitate Hong Kong's Dr Tina Ho in Portland, USA.

Altogether, seven Charya nritya dances were presented at the program which was attended by 25 Charya nritya fans of Portland.

Charya Nritya dance offering event kicked off  with Mahakala charya dance which was performed by Sangha member Joshua Proto.

After that, Arya Tara - Amoghasiddhi charya dance was rendered by Guruji Prajwal Vajracharya and Dr Tina Ho of Hong Kong Dance Mandal.

Likewise, Avalokiteshvara charya dance was offered by Sangha member Adam Bidema whereas Yogini Mandala charya dance was carried out by dancer trio: Guruji Prajwal, Dr Tina Ho of Hong Kong Dance Mandal and Sangha member Anastasia Roderick. Yogini Mandala is one of the ancient and medieval Charya dance nritya which embodies Nairatma, Vajrayogini and Aakashyogini.

Similarly, Sangha member Anastasia Roderick presented a performance 'Vajrayogini' and Dr Tina Ho of Hong Kong Dance Mandal put 'Padmanateshvara' charya nritya dance on the stage. Finally, the special program to welcome and felicitate Dr Tina Ho was wrapped off with Guruji Prajwal's charya dance 'Mahavairochana'.

All the Charya nritya dances were skillfully choreographed by Guruji Prajwal Vajracharya. Charya gitis for all the Charya nrityas were vocalized by singers Joshua Proto and Leson Baker. The program was conducted by Sangha member Terry Satterthwaite.

Dr Tina Ho, who is the leading figure of Charya dance teaching in Hong Kong, is a Ph D in Chinese philosophy, major in Chinese Buddhism, fromthe Sun Yat-sen University of China in 2005. Dr Ho has been teaching in the colleges and sharing her knowledge in different Buddhist centers in Hong Kong in the weekends for last 20 years.

Dr Ho has written two books: "A Philosophical Analysis of Vimalakirti Sutra" (2021) as well as "Blissful Zen" (2010). She also has published a bilingual poetry book: "Dancing in my heart - Romancing the Buddha" (2017).

She has travelled to Indonesia, Taiwan, Nepal, India, Malaysia, USA and other places for learning and practicing Dharma and meditation and receiving teachings from Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche  and other great masters.

Dr Ho is also practicing Charya nritya of Newar Buddhism under the guidance of 35th lineage holder Prajwal Vajracharya and his senior student LiAnne almost 10 years. In the past four years, she has been teaching in her own Buddhist center on dances.

Potluck Dinner, Debriefing for Starlight Parade Participation

Portland, June 11 (Nepal Oregon News): A potluck dinner and debriefing for Nritya Mandala Mahavihara's participation at Portland's Starlight Parade was organized on Saturday, June 10, 2023.

The debriefing - interaction revolved around the planning and coordination of Vihara's participation at the parade.

Speaking on the occasion, Prajwal Vajracharya, co-founder of the Mahavihara, reckoned:"We were able to show the city and beyond the unity of the groups, as well as diversity and amazing cultural traditions."

The discussions also took stock of what can be done for the next year's participation. Lauding the role of the community, Prajwal Guruji said:"All the groups came together and did wonderful in their parts. The Kumari was wonderful and beautiful. The Lakhe dance was a fantastic and important addition."

Underscoring the importance of Dhime Baja, Prajwal said:"Without drumming, this would have not been as powerful!" The Raga and Charya were amazing as well, the Guruji stated.

The Mahavihara will leave no stone unturned to make even a better participation in the coming days, the Guruji said and added:"In the future, we hope for more ethnic groups from all the parts of Nepal."

A number of the Nepalese community members also expressed their views during the interaction program.

Meanwhile, on the occasion, Dr Tina Ho also handed over 'Certificate of Participation' to all the Charya Nritya dancers and Charya giti singers who had participated at the International Dance Day program organized by the Mahavihara on April 29, 2023.

The certificates of participation which were issued by Hong Kong Dance Federation were handed over by Dr Tina Ho to Guruji Prajwal Vajracharya, Joshua Proto, Adam Bidema, Anna Shustrova, Anastasia Roderick, Leson Baker, Bobby Romansky and John Ryback.

Likewise, a certificate on completion of World Newah Organization-sponsored Nepal Bhasa Course was given to Dr Tina Ho by Daya Shakya, the course teacher.

Macha Janko Ceremony Held at Vihara

Portland, June 18 (Nepal Oregon News): Macha Janko (Nepal Bhasa), Pasni (Nepali) or Annaprasana (Sanskrit) are words used for a toddler's rice feeding ceremony.

This ceremony is one of the important lifecycle rituals in Nepal, both a cultural and religious celebration, according to priest Prajwal Vajracharya. 

The ceremony is typically held for girls at five months and boys at six months, because it is at about this time the child's digestive system can easily process solid food.

Guru Prajwal Vajracharya was  in San Diego, California,  to perform the Macha Jank rituals of Riyan  (son of Kaushal Vajracharya and Selina Shakya, grandson of Dina Shakya) on Saturday, June 17, 2023.

Also,  a rice feeding ceremony of Eklabya Sharan Shakya (son of Sudip Shakya and Anuja Thapa Magar and grandson of Daya and Jaya Shakya) was held at the temple of the Mahavihara on Sunday, June 4, 2023.

Portland's Dance Mandal Duo Perform Charya Nritya Dances at Himalayan Fair, Berkeley

Mahavihara Lit up with 108 Butter Lamps to Mark 2567th Buddha Jayanti

Portland, May 7, (Nepal Oregon News):  Various programs were organized at  Portland's Nritya Mandala Mahavihara to celebrate 2567th Buddha Jayanti on Saturday, May 6, 2023. The Buddha Jayanti programs included: kids procession around the Mahavihara, Baby Buddha Bath, Naamsangiti Chanting.

Likewise, 108 butter lamps were illuminated during the religious ceremony, followed by the dancing of Refuge Prayer Dance, a Charya Nritya dance, 108 times continuously by all American and Nepali devotees present. 

At the Buddha Jayanti event, Prajwal Vajracharya, a priest and ritual master of Newar Vajrayana Buddhism threw light on the importance of Buddha Purnima celebrations.

Several Buddhist Bhajan songs were presented by Joshua Proto, Anna Shustrova and Adam Bidema.

At the end of the program, a talent show was held. Sangha member Naveena Shakya came up with a poem on Buddha Jayanti while Axi Nityananda (an American devotee) entertained the audience by presenting a Jataka Tale - Buddha as the Rabbit "How the rabbit got on the moon."

Likewise, Daya Shakya, president of Nepali Association of Oregon, made a short presentation on Spiritual Vocabulary in Nepalese Buddhism.

In what has become a good tradition, the annual Buddha Jayanti program in Portland, USA provides the American Buddhists and Nepalese community members to celebrate food, share greetings and interact with each other. Obviously, Buddha Jayanti celebration is also a sure way to enliven and enhance the Newar Buddhist traditions and customs demonstrating the aspirations of the American Buddhists and Nepalese Portlanders to keep up the Newar Buddhist traditions alive.

More than 100 people (American Buddhists and Nepalese community members) participated at the Buddha Jayanti function in Portland, USA.

The evening Buddha Jayanti event was followed by a Kheer dinner (rice cooked in milk with sugar, cashews, cloves, cardamoms, raisins, coconuts etc) along with sweetmeats like Jeri and Lalmohan and other Achars, curries and delicacies.

Portland, May 24 (Nepal Oregon News): Prajwal Vajracharya, one of the seniormost Charya nritya guru and his student Bobby Romansky performed various Charya dances at the Himalayan Fair in Live Oak Park in Berkeley on Saturday-Sunday, May 20-21, 2023. 

Prajwal Guruji presented two Charya dances - Vajravarahi and Ekajati while his student Bobby offered Padmanateshvara and Avalokiteshvara charya dances at the Himalayan Fair. On the occasion, Prajwal Guruji also briefly spoke  about the meaning and history of the charya dances.

Earlier, Prajwal Guruji  also offered volunteer service for the preparation of the Fair along with member of the organizing committee Rajesh Shrestha. 

Meanwhile, the program -- which kicked off with a welcome by Sri Devi and blessing by monks from Sera Jey Monastery -- was also participated by a wide spectrum of famous singers and dancers. Numerous booths showcased Himalayan arts and crafts, food, travel and trekking.

The Himalayan Fair was launched in 1983 by Arlene Blum along with Tibetan Buddhist Monk, Lama Kunga of the Ewam Choden Center. Blum was part of the Bicentennial Everest Expedition in 1976 that set an altitude record for American women.

Virtual Teaching on Amoghasiddhi Buddha

Portland, May 14 (Nepal Oregon News):  A virtual teaching on Amoghasiddhi Buddha was organized by Hong Kong Institute of Buddhist Studies on Saturday, May 13, 2023.

The zoom teaching on Amoghasiddhi Buddha was conducted by Guruji Prajwal Vajracharya, chief priest of the Portland's Nritya Mandala Mahavihara.

Prajwal Guruji, who is a scholar on Newar Buddhism, said:"Pancha Buddhas or Five Buddhas are the five transcendental  Buddhas of Newar Tantric Vajrayana  Buddhism. Vairochana, Amitabha, Ratnasambhava, Akshobhya and Amoghasiddhi Buddhas are the Pancha Buddhas."

Pancha Buddhas including Amoghasiddhi are Sambhogkaya Buddhas and work relentlessly for the wellbeing of all sentient beings, added the Guruji.

Amoghasiddhi in Sanskrit means 'unfalling success', said the Guruji adding that Amoghasiddhi is the last among the Five Buddhas who represents purified form of jealosy. 

He is believed to protect or destroy every ounce of envy or jealosy from the heart of people who meditate on Amoghasiddhi Buddha, said the Guruji.

Throwing light on 'Om Amoghasiddhi Ah Hum', Prajwal Guruji, a 35th generation Vajrayana priest, said: "Amoghasiddhi's mantra is Abhaya which means fearlessness. Amoghasiddhi is associated with the Tantric rite of fearlessness and with success or siddhi."

The virtual talk presented a detailed and comprehensive portrayal and description of Amoghasiddhi Buddha.

Addressing the zoom gathering,  the chief pujari at the Nritya Mandala Mahavihara said: "Amoghasiddhi Buddha is depicted in green color holding double vajra. His consort is Arya Tara and his vehicle (vahan) is Garuda."

During the address to the zoom participants, Prajwal Guruji touched on Sapta Naga (seven serpents). Sapta Naga were the ones that protected Siddharth Gautam Buddha during his Tapasya in the forest from rains and storms, he further said.

Prajwal Guruji went on saying:"Amoghasiddhi is the only Buddha who has a canopy of snakes over his head. Among the Pancha Buddhas, Amoghasiddhi is represented in the stupa, chaitya or Chibaha Dyo facing to the north."

Twenty participants from Hong Kong took part at the zoom teaching on Amoghasiddhi. At the end of the virtual teaching, Prajwal Guruji answered to the questions of the participants.

Vihara Organizes Potluck Picnic at Laurel Hurst Park for Starlight Parade Prep

Portland, May28 (Nepal Oregon News): A potluck picnic was organized by Nritya Mandala Mahavihara at the Laurel Hurst Park in Portland on Saturday, May 27, 2023.

The potluck picnic, which was attended by the American Buddhists as well as Nepalese community members, was organized as a rehearsal for participating at the Starlight Parade in Portland to be held on June 3, 2023.

Speaking briefly on the occasion, Prajwal Vajracharya, co-founder of Nritya Mandala Mahavihara said:"Our Mahavihara has been selected for the Rose Festival Starlight parade this year. Our participation in the parade is an opportunity to showcase our identity and culture to the Portland community." 

The focus of our participation is to give an introduction to Portlanders about various Charya dances including the Pancha Buddha, said Prajwal Guruji and added:"Our participation will also feature Living Goddess Kumari, Lakhe Dance, Dhime Baja, Nepalese ladies in Haku Patasi and Dupatta saree. Sherpa community members are also expected to take part."

The Starlight is an annual parade held in Portland, Oregon as part of the Portland Rose Festival.

Weekly Activities in Vihara Continue

In May, as usual and as always, Dharani chanting on Zoom was conducted once a week every Tuesday evening. Similarly, Sadhana practice and Buddha Bhajan singing practice were held on each Wednesday evening. Likewise, the practice of singing Charya giti was performed in the mornings every Friday.
